I have had reports of this utility creating a bus error when the 'Gamma Fading' setting is on whilst running on certain Macs. This util now ships with Gamma Fading turned off as default. The util does certain checks before attempting to Gamma Fade the Macs screen, obviously this checking is not extensive enough and I will try and correct this problem once I get more info and have chance to study the MacsBug file dump in more detail.
If you have this program and it will not run properly, you may have been passed a copy that has Gamma Fading turned on in the preferences. The preference settings are stored in the util's resource fork and deleting a preference file will not help you here. A temporary work around is to manually alter the preference settings using a resource editor such as ResEdit, heres what to do -
Open the utility with ResEdit (make sure you made a copy, incase your clumsy )
Open the 'PREF' resource and make sure all the hex values are set to zero (click in the left window and alter any numbers from '01' to '00').
Save changes and quit ResEdit. The util will now have all preference settings changed to 'most compatable'.
The util will not run from CD ROM or a locked volume, or if the util has been locked from Finder. The program now reports an error and asks the user to run the util from a suitable volume. This is necessary as the phone number/phone number names and registration info needs to be written/updated during program use.
